A prayer for my son who is addicted

Know someone in this exact hour? Send them this page

You raised him. You know what he was like at six, at twelve, on the day you were proudest. And now there's a phone on your bedside table that you check before you're even fully awake.

There is a particular grief in loving an addicted child: he is alive, and you are already mourning. Nobody brings casseroles for this.

You do not have the power to save him. You never did — that was always God's, and it still is. What you have is a mother's or a father's love, and the fiercest prayers on earth. Use them tonight. Then rest.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    If he's in danger tonight
If you believe he has overdosed or is at risk of harming himself, call emergency services or a crisis line for him — even if he'll be angry. Anger can be repaired. The other thing can't.
  2. 2
    Set the phone down
Put it on charge in another room. If he needs you, it will ring. Checking it every four minutes is not watching over him; it's slowly hurting you.
  3. 3
    Find one other parent
Parents of addicted children carry a shame nobody talks about. Find one who understands — a group, a friend, a course — and say it out loud.

A prayer for right now

Father, you know where my son is tonight. I don't.

Go to him. Stand next to him. Be the one thing in that room that is stronger than what he's taking.

I gave him to you when he was small. I'm giving him to you again, because I keep taking him back and I can't carry him.

Keep him alive. Keep him alive. Keep him alive.

And let me sleep, just tonight, knowing that you don't.

Amen.

"Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy." — Jeremiah 31:16
