For the person in recovery

I relapsed tonight. What do I do now?

First: you are still here, and you are reading this. That matters more than you think right now.

A relapse is not the end of your recovery. It is a night inside your recovery. Everything you learned, every day you stayed clean, every person who believes in you — none of that was deleted an hour ago. The shame in your chest is real, but it is not telling you the truth about who you are.

Don't decide anything big tonight. Don't call the people who hurt you. Don't write yourself off. Do the small, boring, safe things below, and let morning come.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    Get safe
If you've taken something and you feel wrong — chest, breathing, confusion — call emergency services now. Don't wait to see.
  2. 2
    Tell one person
A sponsor, a friend, a pastor, a sibling. One text: "I slipped tonight. I'm okay. Can we talk tomorrow?" Shame shrinks the moment it's spoken.
  3. 3
    Make tomorrow easy
Pour out what is left. Put your phone across the room. Set an alarm. Drink water. Lie down even if you can't sleep.

A prayer for right now

God, I did it again.

I don't have a good prayer in me tonight. I have this one.

Don't let go of me. I know I let go of you for a few hours. Please don't do the same.

Get me to morning. Give me one honest phone call to make. And when I wake up, let me start again — not from zero, from here.

Amen.

"Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand." — Psalm 37:24
