My husband relapsed again. What do I do?

Know someone in this exact hour? Send them this page

You've been here before, which is exactly why this one hurts differently. The first time there was shock. Now there's something heavier: the knowledge that hope has a cost.

Here is what is true tonight. His relapse is not your failure. You did not cause it, you cannot control it, and you cannot cure it — not by loving harder, watching closer, or praying better. That is not a slogan. It is the boundary that keeps you sane.

You are allowed to be angry. You are allowed to be tired of being strong. God is not offended by either.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    Make sure everyone is safe
If there is any threat of violence or he is in danger from what he has taken, call emergency services. Your safety and your children's come first, always.
  2. 2
    Don't have the conversation tonight
Nothing said to someone who is drunk or high will be remembered the way you mean it. Say less than you want to. Sleep somewhere you feel calm.
  3. 3
Reach out to one person who knows
A friend, a sister, a pastor's wife, a group. You were never meant to carry this alone — not tonight, not ever.

A prayer for right now

Lord, I'm so tired.

I've prayed for him more times than I can count and tonight it feels like none of it landed.

Hold him — because I can't right now. And hold me, because no one else is going to tonight.

Show me the line between loving him and losing myself. Give me the strength to keep it.

Amen.

"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds." — Psalm 147:3
