A prayer for my daughter who is addicted

Know someone in this exact hour? Send them this page

There are fears you have for a daughter that you don't say to anyone, and addiction drags every one of them into the open. Where is she. Who is she with. Is she safe. Is she alive.

You have probably been told to let go. Nobody who says that has done it. What you can do is stop carrying the parts that were never yours — her choices, her consequences, her recovery — and keep carrying the part that always will be: your love for her.

Pray this badly. Pray it crying. God has heard far worse from far better people than you or me.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    If she is in danger
If you think she has taken too much, or is with someone who could hurt her, call emergency services or a crisis line. Do not wait to be certain.
  2. 2
Write it down instead of sending it
The long text you want to send at midnight — write it in a notebook. Read it in the morning. Send the version that is love, not fear.
  3. 3
Tell someone who won't judge her
You protect her by staying silent, and the silence is drowning you. Find one person or one group where you can say her name honestly.

A prayer for right now

Lord, I would take her place if you let me. You know I would.

You won't. So I'm asking you to do what I can't — be with her where she is tonight, in whatever room, whatever state.

Protect her from the people who see her as something to use. Wake something in her that remembers who she is.

And help me love her tomorrow without trying to control her, because that has never once worked.

Amen.

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee." — Isaiah 43:2
