The phone call, the police station, the paperwork, the sick lurch when you hear the word 'charged'. Whatever you are feeling right now — panic, fury, shame, numbness — is a normal response to an abnormal night.

Here is something no one will tell you at the station: an arrest is sometimes the first honest thing that has happened in a long time. It is not the ending you wanted. It may be the interruption they needed.

You do not have to fix this tonight. You have to get through tonight.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
Get the facts, not the story
Ask what the charge is, where they are being held, and when they will be released or appear in court. Write it down. Everything else can wait.
  2. 2
    Don't bail out your judgement
Whether you pay bail, hire a lawyer, or let them sit — decide it in daylight, with one calm person you trust, not at 1 AM in a car park. There is no right answer, only a considered one.
  3. 3
Look after the rest of the family
Siblings will have heard. Tell them the truth in simple words. Eat something. This will be a long road and you are the one who has to walk it steadily.

A prayer for right now

God, this isn't how it was supposed to go.

My child is in a cell tonight and I can't get to them. You can. Go to them. Let them feel something in that room that isn't fear.

Give me a clear head for the decisions I have to make. Keep me from making them out of panic or pride.

And if this is the bottom — let it be the bottom. Let something start here.

Amen.

"The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust." — Psalm 18:2
