For brothers and sisters

My brother overdosed. I don't know what to do.

Know someone in this exact hour? Send them this page

Maybe you're in a hospital corridor right now. Maybe you got the call and you're sitting in the car, unable to turn the key. Maybe he made it. Maybe you don't know yet. Whatever this hour is, breathe. You are allowed to not be okay.

Siblings get forgotten in addiction. Parents get the casseroles and the prayer chains; brothers and sisters get told to be strong for Mum. You have grown up beside this — the missed birthdays, the lies you covered for, the good years that made the bad ones worse. You've earned the right to fall apart for a minute.

If he survived: this is not the end, and it doesn't have to be a rehearsal for the end either. Overdose is sometimes the door people finally walk through. If he didn't — nothing on this page will fix that, but you are not alone in it, and there's a place below to sit with someone tonight.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    Get the medical facts
Ask the staff plainly: is he stable, what did he take, what happens next. Write it down — you won't remember it tomorrow. If he's being discharged, ask about naloxone (Narcan) to take home.
  2. 2
    Don't make promises tonight
Not to him ("I'll never leave you"), not to your parents ("I'll sort this"), not to yourself ("I'm cutting him off"). Shock makes vows it can't keep. Decide things in daylight.
  3. 3
Let one person hold you up
Text a friend, a pastor, a partner: "My brother OD'd. I'm at the hospital. Can you just be on the phone?" You have spent years being the steady one. Tonight, let someone else be.

A prayer for right now

God, he's my brother.

I've been angry at him for years and right now I would give anything to hear him lie to me one more time.

If he's still here — keep him here. Wake him up, in every sense.

If you've taken him — I don't have words for that yet. Just don't leave me in this corridor alone.

Amen.

"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." — Proverbs 17:17
