For the person in recovery

I want to drink tonight.

Good. You typed it instead of doing it. That's not nothing — that's the whole fight, happening right now, and you're still in it.

The craving feels permanent. It isn't. Most cravings peak and pass inside twenty to thirty minutes if you don't feed them. That's the length of a TV episode. That's a walk around the block twice. You don't have to beat tonight. You have to beat the next half hour, and then the one after that.

The voice telling you "just one" is not you. It's the illness, and it has one script. You've heard it before. You know how the story ends. You don't have to read it again.

Three things to do in the next hour

  1. 1
    Change the room
Stand up. Go somewhere else — outside if you can. Cravings live in the place and the position you're in. Move your body and you move the craving.
  2. 2
    Tell someone, right now
Sponsor, friend, pastor, or the companion in this app. Say the actual words: "I want to drink tonight." A craving spoken out loud loses about half its weight.
  3. 3
    Eat, drink water, delay
Hunger and thirst masquerade as craving. Eat something sweet, drink a glass of water, and set a timer for 30 minutes. Promise yourself nothing except that you'll get to the timer.

A prayer for right now

God, I want a drink.

I'm not going to pretend to you that I don't. You already know.

Get me through the next thirty minutes. Not tomorrow, not the rest of my life — thirty minutes.

Put someone in my path. Put something in my hands that isn't a glass.

And when this passes — because you say it will — help me remember that it did.

Amen.

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able." — 1 Corinthians 10:13
